Box Art Disparity — Sega Master System Finally Gets It's Due
23 August 2010 8:44 pm
I know I've been neglecting this console for a while, so hopefully the latest installment of this feature series represents one step towards remedying this problem. What can I say? When you don't grow up with a console—I was an NES boy—it makes it that much harder to step outside your nostalgic comfort zone. The examples below provoke some debate. Which one is better? Outside Japan (on the left) or the Japanese version (on the right)? How do you think the reigonal differences stack up in general? Read more to find out.

Continuing My PC Engine CD Kick — Four More RPGs Added
18 August 2010 7:06 pm
My latest favorite retro video game web site is The Brothers Duomazov, which has a very impressive collection of PC Engine game reviews. They're written in an entertaining tone and also include a wonderful breadth of screen shots. Largely thanks to this site, I've discovered four worthy additions to the greatest games list for the PC Engine CD, and I've also added them in the recommended section of the Top 10 RPGs. Unfortunately, due to my inability to read Japanese and the lack of fan translations for these titles, I can't currently give them a proper chance at cracking the actual top 10.

More Recommended Adventure Games — Top 10 Update
10 August 2010 6:23 pm

I was kind of rushing to get the Top 10 Adventure Games list out the door before July came to a close, and I knew that I was neglecting my favorite console, the TurboGrafx-16 CD / PC Engine CD. While Sega was obsessed with inane full motion video "games," some incredible digital comics were getting cranked out for the PCE. While Snatcher is the most well-known Digital Comic for this console, here are four other top-notch examples of the genre. For now they're appended to the list of recommended games for Adventures, but after some more playing it's entirely possible that one of them will jump into the top 10.

Cobra II gets the Axe
20 March 2010 10:45 am

I've since realized that Space Adventure Cobra II was also released for the Sega CD as Space Adventure Cobra. Upon playing the Sega CD version (much more user-friendly, since it's in English rather than Japanese), the story and gameplay didn't hold up as well as I had hoped. The writing was pretty awful, and not in a so bad it's good kind of way. So, you won't find Cobra II listed among the greatest TurboGrafx-16 CD Games any more.
